Des-Cru-Pac — short for Destroyers, Cruisers, Pacific — was the informal name for the U.S. Navy's Pacific destroyer and cruiser forces during the Second World War. Commissioned Officers' Mess scrip of this type circulated as a closed-economy currency aboard ship or at shore facilities, eliminating the need to handle U.S. currency in environments where cash accountability was both logistically awkward and a security concern.
These mess chits are among the more ephemeral artifacts of wartime naval finance. Paper, humidity, and the casual disregard of men in a war zone conspired against survival rates.
