Australia's five-cent piece has carried the echidna since decimal introduction in 1966, making it one of the longest-running unaltered coin designs in the country's history. The 2024 issue marks the first effigy change to the obverse since Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, with Jody Clark's portrait of Charles III — the same used across Commonwealth coinage — replacing the final Raphael Maklouf-derived effigy of his mother.
The Royal Australian Mint was notably slower than some Commonwealth counterparts in introducing the new effigy, with transitional production logistics delaying Charles III issues into 2024.
