The Agathe Dollar was a local trade currency issued by the Chambre de Commerce du Grand Ste-Agathe in 1992 as a promotional scrip scheme — a type of community currency designed to keep consumer spending circulating among member businesses in the resort town of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts in the Laurentians. These programs were common in Canadian tourist communities during the late 1980s and early 1990s, typically tied to seasonal promotions and redeemable only at participating local merchants.
The 5-cent denomination is the smallest in the Agathe Dollar series, which is unusual for scrip of this type — fractional values below 25 cents rarely saw meaningful use in trade currency schemes and were often collected rather than spent.
