New Zealand military canteen tokens in paper or card form were issued at several field hospitals and base camps during the Second World War to manage troop spending without relying on cash, which was both a security risk and administratively awkward in forward areas. The 4th NZ General Hospital operated in the Middle East theater, and canteen scrip of this type circulated only within the issuing unit — it had no value elsewhere and was theoretically redeemable only through that canteen's own accounts.
These card pieces survive in very small numbers. Most were discarded, lost, or deliberately destroyed at the close of canteen operations when the unit moved or disbanded.
