Sri Lanka's aluminium small-denomination coinage of this period followed the 1972 republican rebranding from Ceylon, but the 5 cents specifically continued well into the late 1980s despite near-total irrelevance to daily commerce — inflation had eroded its purchasing power to practically nothing before the series even concluded. The switch to aluminium from the earlier nickel-brass reflected cost pressures, not any reform agenda.
