Obverse lettering UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1884
Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination FIVE CENTS in two bold lines of large raised lettering, with FIVE arching along the upper portion of the field and CENTS curving along the lower, flanking the central octagonal perforation. To the left and right of the hole appear two crossed fasces rendered in fine parallel line engraving, serving as symbolic devices evoking civic authority and strength. The field between the lettering and the central void is open and unadorned, drawing full attention to the denomination and the decorative elements. A continuous beaded border encircles the entire reverse, consistent with the proof-finish treatment found on most surviving examples of this Judd-1724 pattern.
