Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing left, her hair elaborately arranged in flowing waves and drawn up into a coiled chignon adorned with a floral spray, a coronet inscribed LIBERTY across the brow. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper and lateral periphery, while the date 1882 appears prominently in the lower field. The design is framed by a bold dentilated border.

Reverse description A large Roman numeral V dominates the central field, flanked by an open agricultural wreath composed of corn, cotton bolls, and oak leaves tied with a ribbon bow at the base. The national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs along the upper rim above the wreath. The entire design is contained within a fine dentilated border.
