Obverse description Central device features a large heraldic shield with vertical lines in the lower half and horizontal lines in the upper chief, flanked on either side by ornate scrollwork and sprigs of laurel or oak bearing leaves and berries. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, while the date 1866 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The composition is engraved in the precise, high-relief style characteristic of James B. Longacre's work for the Philadelphia Mint.
