Reverse description A large numeral 5 occupies the center of the field, surrounded by an arrangement of radiating rays and thirteen stars. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper portion of the rim, while CENTS is inscribed along the lower rim. The bold central numeral and star-and-ray motif echo the design later adopted for the Shield nickel series, reflecting experimental reverse designs under consideration at the Philadelphia Mint in 1866.
