Andorra issued its own coinage throughout the late twentieth century as legal tender for local use, despite never adopting a formal currency of its own — the French franc and Spanish peseta both circulated simultaneously. When Spain joined the eurozone in 2002 and the peseta disappeared, Andorra's parallel coinage series lost much of its practical rationale, making the final years of issue transitional pieces in the most literal sense.
