Vespella de Gaià is a small municipality in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona with a population that, during the 1930s, barely exceeded a few hundred souls. Notes like this one — local emergency fractional currency issued during the Spanish Civil War — were produced by hundreds of Catalan and Spanish municipalities when the Republic's small-change supply collapsed almost entirely after July 1936. The coinage hoarding was immediate and near-universal.

Turró catalogs over three thousand such emissions. At 53 × 43 mm on thick card stock, this is physically closer to a bus ticket than a banknote, which is essentially what it functioned as.
