Tragó de Noguera is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, Catalonia. This 5 céntimos piece is one of the emergency local issues produced during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small coinage after 1936 — copper and nickel were redirected to the war effort, and the central government's replacement token coinage arrived slowly and unevenly in rural areas. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities filled the gap themselves, printing or stamping their own fractional notes and cardboard discs with minimal official oversight.
Turró catalogues this issue under the broader Lleida provincial groupings, but surviving examples from Tragó de Noguera are notably scarce, reflecting the village's small population and the brief window these pieces were in use before the Nationalist advance into the region in early 1938.
