Tiana is a small municipality in the Maresme comarca, northeast of Barcelona. This 5 céntimos note is one of hundreds of local emergency fractional issues produced by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, when Republican authorities hoarded metallic coin and communities were left to improvise their own small-change substitutes. The Ajuntament de Tiana, like dozens of similarly sized towns, printed its own paper scrip simply to keep local commerce functional.
Turró's catalog documents over 2,400 of these municipal issues — the sheer volume underscores how completely the small-denomination coinage infrastructure collapsed after 1936.
