Sabadell was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued their own small-denomination emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War, beginning in 1936, after the withdrawal of metallic coinage from circulation effectively paralyzed everyday retail transactions. The Ajuntament de Sabadell, a major textile-industrial center north of Barcelona, produced a full series of these locals — known collectively as moneda local de guerra — under the authority temporarily granted to municipalities and collectivized enterprises by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Turró's catalog remains the essential reference for this material, and the 2236 assignment places this note within a well-documented but genuinely scarce series. Sabadell issues saw real street circulation and condition survivors are accordingly limited.
