Pradell de la Teixeta is a tiny municipality in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of other Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the Republic's small-change supply collapsed in 1936–37. These local issues — collectively known as "moneda de necessitat" — were produced under Republican authority granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which gave municipal councils the right to print their own low-denomination scrip.
The square format is characteristic of several small Tarragona-area emissions, almost certainly a practical decision driven by whatever card stock the local administration had on hand rather than any deliberate design choice. Survival rates for Pradell's emission are low — the town's total population was barely in the hundreds.
