Plana de Riucorp is a tiny municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of other Catalan towns it issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's chronic shortage of small coin left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These municipal paper issues — known collectively as the *guerra civil* local emissions — were authorized under a 1936 decree that gave ayuntamientos the right to produce their own low-denomination scrip.
