Mas de Barberans is a small municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese villages during the Spanish Civil War, its municipal council issued its own fractional emergency currency when coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. These hyper-local issues — collectively catalogued under the Spanish Civil War municipal series — were produced with whatever printing resources were locally available, which explains the card stock construction: small job-lot printers or even hand-stamped office equipment rather than anything approaching a formal note press.
Turró documents over 1,500 such issuers. The sheer number makes individual municipal pieces genuinely difficult to attribute or date precisely.
