Margalef de Montsant is a small municipality in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona with a population historically under a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republic's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage prompted thousands of Catalan municipalities — including the most obscure — to issue their own emergency paper currency under decree. These local emissions, collectively known as *moneda de necessitat* or *paper moneda*, were technically legal but wildly inconsistent in design, quality, and backing.
Turró's catalog documents over 1,400 entries before reaching this note, which places Margalef de Montsant among the smallest and most peripheral issuers in the entire Catalan series. Thick card stock construction is typical of municipalities that lacked access to proper banknote paper and improvised with whatever the local print shop had available.
