Maldà is a village in the comarca of l'Urgell, Catalonia, with a population that barely reached 400 during the 1930s. Like hundreds of other Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency after the hoarding and melting of coins created a severe shortage of small change — a problem acute enough by mid-1936 that the Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized local issues to fill the gap.
Turró catalogues this as #1404, placing it firmly within that documented municipal series. At this denomination, it would have handled the most basic daily transactions a village economy demanded.
