Hinojosa del Duque is a small municipality in the Córdoba province of Andalusia, and this 5 céntimos piece belongs to the extraordinary proliferation of local emergency scrip issued across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War. When the Nationalist uprising of July 1936 triggered an immediate hoarding of metallic currency, thousands of town councils — many with no banking infrastructure whatsoever — were forced to produce their own fractional substitutes. The quality and survival rate of these pieces varies wildly by locality.
At 45 × 31 mm on thick card, it was built to handle brief, intensive local use rather than any broader circulation.
