Falset is a small town in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely after 1936. The Turró catalogue documents this note as #990 — Turró's systematic work on Spanish Civil War local issues remains the primary reference for these municipal pieces, and a number in the high 900s places Falset among the many smaller councils whose issues were modest in volume and often printed on whatever card stock was at hand.
The official stamp was the principal guarantee of validity — the town's physical seal applied to each note individually, which kept counterfeiting difficult but production slow.
