Carchelejo is a small municipality in the sierra north of Jaén, and like dozens of similarly isolated Andalusian villages, it resorted to locally issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after Republican-zone copper and small silver coinage effectively vanished from circulation by late 1936. The Comisión de Abastos — a rationing and supply committee rather than any banking authority — had no formal mandate to issue currency, which is precisely why these pieces exist in such uncertain quantities today. Many were never catalogued at all, and the Gari reference remains unassigned.
