Campillo de Arenas is a small municipality in the Jaén province of Andalusia, and this 5 céntimos note was produced by the local U.G.T. agricultural workers' union during the Spanish Civil War — one of hundreds of hyper-local emergency issues that flooded Republican-held towns after the monetary system fragmented in 1936. With the central government unable to supply small change, unions, municipalities, and cooperatives printed their own. The Sociedad de Trabajadores de la Tierra was the land workers' section, the rural backbone of U.G.T. membership in southern Spain.
