The Unió de Cooperadors de Barcelona was a workers' cooperative network with deep roots in the Catalan labour movement. When the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936, the collapse of normal commercial activity and acute coin shortages prompted hundreds of municipalities, unions, and cooperative bodies across Catalonia to issue their own emergency paper fractional currency — a phenomenon known as moneda de necessitat. This note is one of those emissions, filling a gap the Republican administration was too disrupted to address through official channels.

Imprenta Martí, Marí y Cia. was a Barcelona commercial press, not a specialist security printer, which is exactly what you'd expect from a cooperative scrip issue produced under wartime conditions in a matter of weeks.
