Tranvías de Barcelona Colectivizados was one of hundreds of enterprises seized and collectively operated by anarcho-syndicalist workers under the CNT-FAI during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. The collectivization decree of October 1936 formalized what had already happened in practice — workers running the tramway network from July of that year, including issuing their own emergency fractional currency when coinage effectively disappeared from circulation in Republican Catalonia.

Small-denomination vales like this one functioned as wage tokens and fare change substitutes simultaneously. Tipografía Emporium was a Barcelona commercial printer pressed into service for dozens of such issues across the city's collectivized industries.
