Obverse description The obverse consists of a Spanish Republic postal stamp (5 Céntimos, Correos) affixed to the cardboard disc, printed in brown on a cream ground. The stamp displays the large numeral '5' at centre within a circular frame, with the denomination legend 'CÉNTIMOS' below and 'CORREOS' at the base. The legend 'REPUBLICA ESPAÑOLA' runs around the upper arc of the stamp's inner circle. The perforated edges of the stamp are visible, as it was mounted directly onto the cardboard blank to serve as the face of this emergency provisional piece.

Additional information

Altafulla, a small coastal municipality in Tarragona, issued emergency cardboard currency during the Spanish Civil War when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin supply left local economies improvising. These ajuntament-issued pieces — produced by dozens of Catalan towns simultaneously in 1937 — were a direct consequence of coin hoarding and metal requisitioning for the war effort. Cardboard was the material of last resort.

Few survived intact. The material degrades readily with handling, and most circulated examples are edge-worn or cracked.
