Alfarràs is a small municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida, and this 5 céntimos note belongs to the vast category of Spanish Civil War-era local emergency currency — the paper money issued by towns and villages across Republican-held Catalonia from 1936 onward when metallic coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own notes, many on whatever card stock was at hand, with no central oversight of design or denomination.
Turró's catalog remains the definitive reference for this material. Small-town issues from Segrià province are among the harder pieces to locate in any condition.
