Obverse description Central to the obverse is the national coat of arms of Costa Rica, depicting three volcanoes rising above a bay with two sailing ships, surmounted by a rising sun and flanked by decorative scrollwork. A banner above the shield bears the national motto. The arms are enclosed within a beaded inner border. The legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA curves along the upper periphery, while the date 1979 appears in the lower field, all within a beaded rim.
