| Reverse description | The reverse presents the denomination 5 CENTIMES in bold, incuse-style numerals and lettering within a raised central circular medallion, mirroring the two-plane architectural design of the obverse. The broad flat border surrounding the medallion carries the republican motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ distributed around the full circumference. The stark, unadorned treatment of the value within the inner disc emphasises the functional, pattern-trial nature of this essai piece. |

This is a pattern (essai) submitted during the design competition that preceded France's third-series small coinage reform of the early Third Republic. Dubois was among several artists invited to submit competing designs, and nickel silver was itself under evaluation as a candidate alloy — the French monetary administration was weighing it against other base-metal compositions before settling on the final production specifications.
