| Obverse description | Letterpress-printed in black on red card stock, the note is entirely typeset with no vignette, ornamental border, or underprint. The issuer title, committee designation, and serial number occupy the upper portion in diminishing type sizes, while an extended redemption clause — specifying eligible localities and permitted goods categories including bread, flour, groceries, vegetables, charcuterie, butchery, and fuel — fills the lower portion in small condensed type. |

When war mobilization in August 1914 drained coin from circulation almost overnight, hundreds of French municipalities issued their own emergency card money rather than wait for the central authorities to respond. Croix, a textile town in Nord just east of Roubaix, was among the earliest — its Comité de Secours notes appearing within weeks of the German advance into the region.
Nord fell under German occupation by October 1914, which raises the uncomfortable question of how long these notes actually circulated under French municipal authority before the occupying administration imposed its own monetary arrangements. Most Comité de Secours issues from occupied Nord had very short functional lives.
