Camp de Précigné was a French internment facility in the Sarthe département that housed civilian internees — primarily German and Austro-Hungarian nationals — during the First World War. Like many such camps, it issued its own internal scrip to manage commerce among the prisoner population without allowing access to metropolitan currency. These small-denomination notes were strictly camp money, non-exchangeable outside the wire.
Grey paper was deliberately chosen for this denomination to distinguish it from higher values at a glance — a practical necessity in a camp economy where transactions had to move quickly across a language barrier.
