Obverse description Letterpress-printed in black on plain paper stock, the obverse is framed within a decorative interlaced border. At centre, a composite vignette unites a ship's anchor, a trident, and a caduceus — traditional emblems of maritime trade — flanked by the denomination '0f.05' in large numerals on each side. The issuer's name arcs across the top, with the reimbursement clause 'Remboursable à toute présentation' and the year '1916' at the foot, the printer's imprint appearing in the lower margin.

Comments

French colonial chambers of commerce issued emergency small-change notes across Algeria during WWI because the wartime metal shortage drained copper and nickel coinage from circulation almost entirely. Oran's chamber was among the more active issuers, producing several denominations through 1916–1917 to fill the gap left by the disappearing centime coins.

Moullot & fils aîné, a Marseille commercial printer with no particular security printing pedigree, handled the job — a sign of how little counterfeiting risk was considered for denominations this small.
