| Reverse description | The central field features the denomination CINCO CENT. within a laurel and olive wreath, tied at the base, beneath the national motto inscribed along the upper periphery. The fineness designation 9D. FINO appears within the legend, accompanied by the mint mark PTS with a monogram and assayer's initials F.E. flanking the date. The date 1884 is positioned in the lower central area of the design. The overall composition is characteristic of the Potosí Mint's pattern coinage style of the period, with sharply struck devices on polished proof fields. |

Bolivia's 1884 coinage reform followed the catastrophic loss of its Pacific coastal territory to Chile in the War of the Pacific, which concluded the previous year. The new centavo-denominated series required retooling of the mint at Potosí, and pattern strikes like this piece were produced to test designs and alloy standards before committing to full production runs. Whether this silver pattern was ever seriously considered for circulation or produced purely as a proof of concept is not firmly established in the literature.
