Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican republican eagle displayed with wings spread, perched atop a cactus growing from a rocky outcrop amid water, devouring a serpent in its beak — the national arms of Mexico. The eagle faces left in the traditional heraldic pose. The legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1868 appears in the lower exergue. The coin's rim is bordered by a fine toothed or beaded edge.
