The Banco Nacional del Paraguay was established in 1883, just years after the country had lost an estimated half or more of its population to the War of the Triple Alliance — a catastrophe that left the monetary system in ruins and the state dependent on foreign capital and foreign presses to rebuild basic financial infrastructure. This note was printed by ABNC in New York, a long-standing arrangement for Paraguayan issues of the period when no domestic printing capacity existed.
The 5 centavos fuertes denomination was effectively fractional currency, issued to address chronic small-change shortages that plagued commerce throughout the River Plate region in the late nineteenth century.
