Durango's revolutionary coinage of 1914 emerged from the chaos of the Mexican Revolution, when federal supply lines collapsed and individual states — many under Constitutionalist control — began striking their own emergency issues to meet acute shortages of small change. The Durango series is among the better-documented of these provisional emissions, authorized under the state's military governor as Huerta's federal government disintegrated.
The copper-nickel alloy distinguishes this from the cruder cast brass and cardboard emergency money appearing elsewhere in Mexico that same year.
