| Additional information |
Issued by the Constitutionalist forces controlling Chihuahua in 1914, this copper piece belongs to the flood of emergency coinage produced during the Mexican Revolution when the federal monetary system had effectively collapsed. Venustiano Carranza's faction, operating out of northern Mexico, authorized provisional issues like this one to pay troops and maintain basic commerce in territory under their control. The central government in Mexico City recognized none of it.
Chihuahua was the heartland of Villista and Constitutionalist activity simultaneously, which made local monetary authority a contested and fleeting thing. Production quality varies considerably across surviving examples.
