Additional information

The Galápagos Islands have no independent monetary authority — Ecuador dollarized in 2000, and the islands use U.S. currency in daily commerce. These 2008 pieces are a private issue, produced for the collector market rather than any administrative or governmental purpose, which explains why they appear in reference catalogs under the "X" (unofficial) series rather than standard national coinage.
