Paraguay's monetary system was effectively rebuilt from scratch in the 1880s and 1890s following the catastrophic War of the Triple Alliance, which killed an estimated 60–70% of the country's male population and left the economy in ruins. These small copper-nickel pieces were among the first stable fractional coins issued under the reformed currency framework established by the Banco del Paraguay y Río de la Plata.
