These small silver pieces were struck at multiple mints simultaneously during one of the most chaotic stretches in Mexican history — the French Intervention and the imposed reign of Maximilian I overlapped almost precisely with this series, running from 1863 through his execution in 1867 and into the restored republic under Juárez. Coins from different assayer combinations and mint locations command very different collector premiums, with the Guanajuato and Zacatecas issues generally the scarcer survivors.
