Additional information

Lithuania's 1936 bronze coinage was produced during the authoritarian presidency of Antanas Smetona, whose nationalist government had ruled by decree since the 1926 coup. By the mid-1930s, the litas had stabilized sufficiently that small bronze denominations saw genuine everyday circulation — these pieces accumulated wear quickly. The KM#81 type was struck at the Kaunas mint, Lithuania's own facility established specifically to assert monetary independence from the foreign mints the country had relied on through the late 1920s.
