Obverse description Central raised inner circle containing a three-quarter facing effigy of Pope Benedict XVI, depicted in papal vestments with hands raised in a gesture of blessing, a small mintmaster mark (G) visible to the right of the date. The legend surrounding the inner circle reads PRUEBA, TRIAL, ESSAI, and PROBE, separated by five-pointed stars, with twelve stars arranged around the outer border. The inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO arcs along the lower portion of the field, and the date 2010 appears in the exergue of the inner circle.

Additional information

Vatican coinage issued under Benedict XVI follows the series introduced with the eurozone adoption in 2002, but annual Vatican sets are produced in strictly limited quantities and sold exclusively through the Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office — they are never released into general circulation. This piece dates to a year when that office capped collector set production at 80,000 units, making even common-denomination pieces effectively scarce on the secondary market.
