| Obverse description | Cast iron cash coin of the Southern Song dynasty, struck during the Jiading reign era of Emperor Ningzong. The obverse bears four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional cross-reading order — top, bottom, right, left — around a central square hole: 嘉定興寶 (Jiading Xingbao, meaning 'Prosperous Currency of the Jiading era'). The characters are contained within a raised inner rim and an outer rim, with the field showing considerable corrosion and encrustations consistent with an iron composition and great age. |
