Szechuan Province issued this piece in 1912, the tumultuous first year of the Republic, when provincial mints across China were operating with considerable autonomy as central authority collapsed following the Xinhai Revolution. Szechuan itself had been the flashpoint — the Railway Protection Movement of 1911, centered in Chengdu, was among the immediate triggers of the uprising that ended the Qing dynasty.
The brass composition distinguishes this from the copper-alloy provincial cash of the late imperial period, reflecting both material shortages and the administrative disorder of the transition year.
