Obverse description Central field displays the ornate quartered arms of Bologna within an oval cartouche, featuring a cross and lion passant in the quarters, surmounted by an elaborate foliate and scroll mantling. A decorative crown or foliate crest appears at the top of the escutcheon. The coin bears no peripheral legend, with the word LIBE appearing within or about the shield, referencing the city's traditional motto of freedom. The entire design is framed by a plain inner border and an outer beaded border.

Reverse description Central device consisting of the papal crossed keys in saltire, with elaborate wards and ornate bow rings, surmounted by the papal tiara with its three crowns and lappets. The circular legend BONONIA DOCET is inscribed around the upper field, divided by the tiara. The denomination indicator B 5 appears in the lower exergue flanked by small mullets or pellets. A beaded border runs along the coin's periphery.
