Obverse description Central device features the Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx, each charged with five bezants — surmounted by a domed crown. The shield is flanked by the mint initials G and A (for Goa), positioned at the lower left and right of the field respectively. Above the crown, the legend IOAO (João) V appears in an arc, referencing the reigning monarch João V of Portugal. The overall design is rendered in low relief consistent with the cast production method typical of Portuguese India copper coinage.
