Additional information

Damão (Daman) operated as a minor Portuguese enclave on the Gujarat coast, hemmed in by Maratha territory for much of the eighteenth century. The bazaruco was a purely local denomination — never used in metropolitan Portugal — developed to service petty trade in the Indian coastal markets and kept deliberately low in intrinsic value to discourage export or hoarding.

The dotted shield variety is the distinguishing diagnostic between closely related Gomes types for this reign, a detail that collapses under worn surfaces.
