Obverse description Central field displays the arms of Bern — a walking bear to sinister on a diagonally striped shield — set within a circular frame and surmounted by a mural crown, the whole flanked by crossed olive branches tied at the base. The canton name CANTON BERN arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1826 at the right and the denomination 5•BATZ• inscribed along the lower field. The design is executed in bold relief with a finely milled border encircling the entire obverse.

Additional information

By 1826, Bern was operating under the Helvetic monetary framework established after the Napoleonic reorganization of Switzerland, but individual cantons still retained the right to strike their own coinage. The 5-Batzen denomination bridged older reckoning habits — the Batzen being a unit Swiss commerce had used since the late medieval period — with the decimal-adjacent reforms pressing in from France. Bern would lose this minting privilege entirely when the Swiss federal coinage system was unified in 1850, making cantonal issues like this one products of a closing window.
