Romania's EU accession in 2007 prompted a currency redenomination the previous year — the leu was revalued at 10,000 old lei to one new leu, and this coin entered circulation as part of that reset. The "without crown" distinction in the type name refers to a design modification made after 2008, when the royal crown was removed from the eagle following political pressure over the use of monarchist imagery on republican state coinage.
