Obverse description The national coat of arms of Panama occupies the central field, depicted in high relief and featuring the divided shield with symbols of the isthmus — crossed swords and rifle in the upper quarters, a cornucopia and a winged wheel in the lower quarters, and the Canal in the centre — surmounted by a harpy eagle with outstretched wings and flanked by nine stars. A row of nine stars arches above the shield, separating the commemorative legend. The circular legend reads REPUBLICA DE PANAMA and 75º ANIVERSARIO around the upper periphery, with the denomination 5 BALBOAS at the base and the fineness LEY 0.925 inscribed in the lower field.

Reverse description A large, finely modelled front-facing bust of Belisario Porras, three-time President of Panama and statesman known as 'The Constructor of the Republic', dominates the field. The portrait depicts him as an elderly gentleman wearing round wire-rimmed spectacles, a suit with a tie, and rendered with considerable sculptural detail in the Franklin Mint style. The legend BELISARIO PORRAS arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1978 is incused in the lower exergue.
